Suzuki Motor Corporation began in 1909 as a manufacturer of weaving looms and has since evolved into a global leader in automobiles, motorcycles, and marine engines through a century of innovation and adaptation.
The company was founded as Suzuki Loom Works in October 1909, in Hamamatsu, Japan, by Michio Suzuki. For the first 30 years, the company focused on developing and producing innovative weaving machines for the silk industry, even exporting its designs overseas.
- Diversification into vehicles: Recognizing the need to diversify, Michio Suzuki started developing small car prototypes in 1937. However, these plans were halted by World War II.
- Motorized Bicycles: Following the post-war collapse of the cotton market, Suzuki shifted focus to affordable transportation. In 1952, it launched its first motorized bicycle, the "Power Free", which featured a revolutionary double-sprocket system allowing the rider to pedal, use the motor, or both.
- Name Change & First Car: The success of the motorized bicycles led the company to change its name to Suzuki Motor Co., Ltd. in 1954. In 1955, Suzuki introduced its first mass-produced car, the Suzulight, an innovative mini-vehicle with front-wheel drive, four-wheel independent suspension, and rack-and-pinion steering.
