A Brief History of Daewoo
Daewoo (meaning “Great Universe”) was a massive South Korean chaebol (conglomerate) founded in 1967. It rose to become the nation’s second-largest conglomerate before collapsing with ~$50 billion in debt, leading to its 1999 dismantlement. The automotive division, established in 1937 as National Motors and later becoming Daewoo Motors, was sold to GM in 2002, becoming GM Korea.
